Get Release-Ready for the New Year

As we wrap up 2025, it’s the perfect time to prep your music for a strong rollout in the new year. Whether you're planning your next single, EP, or full-length project, getting your materials organized now will save you time and set you up for a smoother release. Here’s a quick guide to help you start 2026 strong.

1. Finalize Your Music & Assets

Before anything can be distributed, you'll need:

  • Final WAV files (44.1k, 16-bit or better)

  • Artwork (3000x3000 px, JPG or PNG)

  • Lyric sheets (optional but helpful for sync & DSPs that support lyrics)

  • Instrumentals & clean versions (if applicable)

Tip: Rename your files clearly (e.g., ArtistName_SongTitle_FINAL.wav). It makes the registration process faster.

2. Lock In Your Metadata

Metadata is the backbone of your release. Accurate info = proper credits, searchability, and royalty tracking. Make sure you have:

  • Song title(s)

  • Artist name + featured artists

  • Producer(s), writer(s), and contributors

  • ISRC or request one

  • Release date window

  • Genre & mood tags

  • Publisher information

  • Lyrics (if delivering)

A clean metadata sheet can prevent months of headaches.

3. Take Care of Your Registrations

To get paid correctly, your music must be properly registered.

PRO Registration (ASCAP, BMI, SOCAN, etc.)

  • Register the song and list all writers correctly.

SoundExchange

  • Register your sound recordings to collect digital performance royalties.

Mechanical Royalty Collections

  • If you’re releasing in the U.S., ensure publishing data is delivered to the MLC.

Distribution

  • Upload through your distributor with matching metadata across every platform.

Music Reports, Inc. (MRI)

  • Register your songs to ensure mechanicals and licensing data are recognized across major DSPs, networks, and platforms.

Luminate (formerly Nielsen / SoundScan)

  • Make sure your release information is properly submitted so sales, streams, and chart data are tracked.

AllMusic

  • Submit artist and release information for editorial metadata, visibility, and catalog completeness across the industry.

U.S. Copyright Registration

  • Register your works at the U.S. Copyright Office for legal protection, proof of ownership, and eligibility for statutory damages.

  • This can be done as:

    • SR (Sound Recording)

    • PA (Performance/Composition)

    • Or a combined filing

Copyright registration isn’t required to release music—but it is essential for protecting it.

Consistency is key to avoiding royalty mismatches.

4. Build (or Rebuild) Your Fan Base for 2026

A release is only as strong as the audience behind it. December is the perfect time to warm up your followers:

Update your social profiles

  • Fresh photos

  • Updated bios

  • Links that actually work

  • Prepping a Link-in-Bio page

Re-engage your community

  • Share behind-the-scenes clips

  • Talk about what’s coming in 2026

  • Post works-in-progress, snippets, or teasers

Email list

If you don’t have one yet, start now. DSP algorithms change—email lists don’t.

Content prep

Batch content for January and February so you’re not scrambling.

5. Plan Your Release Strategy

Instead of dropping a track cold, map out:

  • Pre-save campaign

  • Teasers and short-form content

  • Two-week warm-up before release

  • Post-release content (live performance clip, story behind the song, etc.)

A planned release always outperforms a spontaneous one.

  • Why Does Metadata Matter?

Organized metadata can maximize your royalties, help fans find your music, and help music supervisors license your music. Whether its a search on Google, Spotify, Apple Music or any search engine, accurate metadata can help your music get discovered and get paid. Not having your metadata in order and plugged into the right agencies (PRO, MLC, MR, SE) can lead to missed opportunities and even stolen intellectual property. Protect and police what you create.

    Metadata. Its boring. We know.

How Do I Get My Music Licensed?

Your music might be incredible, but getting it licensed requires more than just a great song—it needs to be clear and ready for use. 🎶

    What is Clearance?

Clearance is the legal ability to use your music in film, TV, ads, and more. If your song isn’t properly registered and cleared, music supervisors won’t use it—no matter how good it is.

    Why Does Clearance Matter?

🎬 Music supervisors work under tight deadlines. They need pre-cleared music they can license within hours—not days. If they can’t verify ownership or rights quickly, they’ll move on to another song.

Are Your Songs Ready to Be Licensed?

Properly registered with PROs (ASCAP, BMI, etc.)

Metadata is complete (writers, splits, contact info)

Master & publishing rights are cleared

Easily accessible through a trusted sync platform

If your songs aren’t properly cleared, you could be missing out on major licensing opportunities. 💰 Take the time to get your business in order so your music can work for you!
